In 1903, Pierre Curie, Marie Curie and Henri Becquerel were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics, in recognition of the extraordinary services in the field of radioactivity. With this recognition, Madame Curie was the first woman who had been awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

The very same year, Marie was awarded her DSc from the University of Paris and became the first woman in France to achieve this scientific degree. The Royal Society of London gave her and Pierre the Davy Medal, and in 1904 the Italians awarded them the Matteucci Medal.
